Arroyo High School students Astrid Morales and Mark Roche have been selected as 2010-11 outstanding scholars by the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP).  Qualification for recognition is based on critical reading, mathematics and writing skill scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher.  Students with GPAs of 3.0 to 3.49 receive an honorable mention.

"Although the NHRP does not provide a financial reward, being named is an important academic recognition," said a NHRP spokesperson.  "The program sends a list of all recognized students to subscribing colleges and universities that are particularly interested in academically outstanding seniors of Hispanic/Latino heritage."

"We are very proud of Astrid and Mark on this accomplishment, along with Christian Lin Cobos who received an honorable mention, and wish them all continued success," said Angie Gonzales, Arroyo High School assistant principal.

The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students.  The NHRP recognizes nearly 5,000 students selected from a pool of over 200,000 who took the 2009 PSAT and identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino.
